One side of the lever has a pattern and one side is smooth (Flat). Lever works with common self-locking gate latch.

I can’t say enough about this great product. Exactly what I was looking for. We recently got a new fence installed and we were looking for a way to open our gate from the outside. The gate sits against our house and is part wire part wood so a conventional latch wouldn’t work. Not only does this latch solve the problem but it is an elegant addition to our fence.
